3 Steps To Making Sure Your Pipes Work Properly All Winter

Well, we are in the throes of the winter weather and this one has been a doozy! The temperatures have definitely been demanding attention and proactivity when it comes to driving and keeping warm.

Most people just want to spend these few weeks indoors, preparing for the holidays and spending time together in the cozy warmth. However, a big part of staying warm and cozy indoors is making sure that your plumbing system is in good shape.

During the winter months, this means making sure that your pipes are not going to freeze. This may not be a big concern for all of the pipes in your plumbing system, but it only takes one broken pipe to cause serious damage to your home.

Thankfully, there are some things you can do and steps that you can take to protect your plumbing pipes from freezing during the cold weather storms.

Consider doing the following around your house:

  • If you have an older home that may not be insulated as well as it could be, it is a good idea to keep the thermostat turned up a few degrees during the night when you are sleeping and the weather gets even colder. This can help to combat the freezing temperature from creeping in around your plumbing system.
  • If there are places in your home that get especially cold and there is plumbing – consider running a space heater to protect the plumbing from freezing. Keeping the temperature of the room warm will make it much harder for the water in the pipes to freeze
  • If you are going to be leaving your home for the holidays, turn the main water shut-off valve off to protect your plumbing from freezing while you are gone. If you can’t be home to gauge the weather and how your home will fare, it is best to just prevent any kind of disaster from happening.

We hope that you enjoy the rest of this winter season without having any kind of major plumbing disaster. Hopefully, these tips will help to protect your home and keep you and your family warm and cozy without having to be concerned with freezing pipes.
